Derek sighed...looking at the pile of files in front of him. And there were a lot of cases waiting to look into. Where the Hell were Kyle, Nick and Kat, he needed them. Well, He didn't need Kat, she was a little to young for the legacy cases, but never the less. He began reading the files waiting for the younger mebers to show up. Kyle finally made it to the house sort of sorry that he was late. He walked in noticing Derek sitting down looking at the cases on front of him, which was in a gigantic file. "Sorry, Derek. I would've been here earlier, but I got up late." Kyle sat down putting his bag of supplies next to him. "So what exactly are we dealing with? Demons, witches? Whatever it is, we'll kick it's ass." Kyle sort of liked Derek as a father being that he lost his at a somewhat early age. He didn't want to let Derek down whatsoever. Nick came in from his daily run. He was sweaty and in desperate need of a shower, but decided to report to Derek first. He came
in the library and saw Kyle and Derek sitting at the table with a
huge pile of files. Oh, oh, Nick hated doing paperwork. Derek smiled when Kyle entered and a few seconds later Nick. He saw Nick's face getting sad when he saw the load of piles and grinned to himself. He looked from Kyle to Nick. "Okay, I know we had a slow couple of weeks, but vacation time is over. Let's go to the control room, so that I can show you two the next case." He looked a gain at Kyle and Nick. "I'm afraid you two are going to investigate the case. I know you never worked togther on a case, but I think you can manage. Just watch out for each other." Derek sighed, he needed some more members badly. Less.... action oriented perhaps? No, he thought honestly to himself, with less of a temper. Something that both Kyle and Nick possessed. Even if his more senior member tended to always get himself into danger somehow. He walked to the controlroom. It wasn't long before Alex showed up, also getting a glimpse of the paper work and sighing. "Quiet day out of the question or are we going to have a paper work up to our eyeballs kind of quiet day?" Alex wasn't the only one with questions but the next one was asked by 19-year old Kyle Summers, and directed toward Nick. The former SEAL turned at the sound of Kyle's voice. "Are you ready Nick?" He had asked. Nick smiled to Kyle, he really liked the guy from the beginning of the new Member's move here, but Kyle always stared so much. Like he wanted to read NIck's thoughts or something. It was bad enough Derek and Alex always picked up his moods and nightmares, but mindreading? Na ah. Bad stuff. "I'm always
ready, Kyle." he replied. He still wnated to take a shower but judging
from the way Derek acted, it was important to "Damn computers." Derek cursed under his breath. Nick smirked at the familiar scene, unable to help himself from saying "ALex to the rescue, into a disaster!" when it ended up Derek giving the thing over to his Research Assistant. Derek gave Nick a look for his comment. "I want to show you all a file but I can't find it. Maybe you can find the file, Alex?" He just hated computers. He just smiled and rolled his eyes at the sight. "Maybe a computer virus? All computers get them at one time or another." Kyle sat down behind Derek and Alex while he noticed Nick was going to stand. I wonder if Kat is going to come or not? he thought. It only took a moment for Alex to access the files and when she did, bringing them up on the main viewer, Derek explained the information they were each seeing. "These cows were found this morning, all drained from their blood. In their neck were two small puncture wounds. We all know what that means so I went on investigation and found out they found several dead homeless people in the last couple of days, drained from their blood, with two small puncture wounds. Right here in San Fransisco." Derek studied the faces of his younger members, awaiting their reactions. Nick looked at the picture and then at Derek "You're gonna say vampire right?" When Derek didn't responded, he knew the answer. "Ah no, not again! I can remember the last time way too well." He rubbed at his neck with a slight grimace of memory. Alex looked at them both, once more feeling the burning embarrassment of what she had done and put them both through during their last brush with blood suckers. "There has to be some other explanation! A prank...someone from the darkside trying to make it look more than it is...can we not jump to conclusions...please." "Excuse me," started Kyle, holding up his hand, "but what else could they be, Alex? I know Vampire bites when I see them and they seem quite real to me. Now, maybe you're right, but for now I'd have to go with Derek on this. It couldn't be anything else that I can think of." Derek heared what they had to say and made his decision. "Alex, I'm
sorry, but I really think we're dealing with vampires here, or at
least people who think they are vampires. And they are Derek nodded to Kyle and Nick "You two are on field investigation. Go to the coroner's office, examine the bodies." He looked at Alex again. "If you're up to it, can you try to find out on the computer if there are simmularities between the murders? Maybe the victims are the same age, same looks, whatever. See what you can dig up." "C'mon people, work to do!" Kyle nodded ready to do his job. "Well, I can't wait!" Kyle was just being sarcastic as usual. "Do we have to cut up the bodies, Nick?" Most of the time, Kyle could handle seeing the insides of the human, but when he had to cut the person open himself to see the inside on the purpose was sort of disgusting. Nick grinned at Kyle "No we don't have to cut the bodies, that's Frances' job. We just have to watch her doing it." He gently poked Kyle. "Why? I thought you were such a tough guy." He laughed when he saw Kyle's face "I have to take a shower and change into some fresh clothes first. Meet you downstairs in a half hour." With that Nick left and headed toward his bedroom. "Whatever." was the teen's response before he too left. Kyle walked
downstairs and sat down looking into his pack while Nick was taking
a shower and getting dressed. Suddenly, he found a picture of his
parents. His father was a sixth Irish and his mother was eighth Indian.
He wasn't sure what tribe, but he guessed Apache for no reason. Tears
started to form in his eyes and he starter to cry as he put the picture
away. Slowly, he cuddled up into a ball in his seat while he felt
cold and sad. Derek watched the two young men leave the controlroom and looked back at Alex. "Are you okay with this?" He walked over to her and put a hand on her shoulder."I know this must be difficult for you, but don't worry, I won't send you out on the field." He gave ger a reassuring smile. Alex blinked, Derek's voice snapping her out of her reminiscent thoughts. "Umm?" "I'm fine," she answered on habit, her tone not fooling either of them "it's just a little close, that's all...I'll handle it. My mind was filtering through my personal experiences, hoping to find some correlation, but time and again I came back to Phillipe." Derek knew Alex was far from 'fine', but he decided to say nothing about it. He looked at her consurned and with a little discomfort. "Alex, there's
something I declined to tell you at the time, but you need to know.
I found out that you still have vampire cells in your blood. And that's
why you can't get near a vampire, because they can turn you to the
dark side in an instant. And I don't want to He saw the fear in her eyes and the shame of what she had done those months ago. And Derek would never forgot it. He had almost lost Alex to the darkside and almost lost Nick when Alex chosse him as her first victim and nearly killed him after draining his blood. He wouldn't
allow history repeat itself......... It only took a few minutes for Nick to shower and change, opting for denim jeans and shirt, before heading downstairs. When he reached the first floor he found Kyle curled on a couch like a kitten. He gently touched Kyle's shoulder, not wanting to scare him "Are you ready to go Kyle?" Kyle looked up at Nick feeling his touch. "Yeah, sorry." Kyle wiped away the tears on Kyle's face. He then stood up and got his pack of supplies ready. Nick drove his mustang and glanced to Kyle from time to time. He wondered
why Kyle was crying back in the house. But he didn't ask, knowing
that Kyle would talk about it when he was ready. Damn, he hated those bloodsucking vampires. He hated the fact they could control your will without even realizing it. Alex took him by surprise, he didn't even realized it till it was too late. And he was still wondering why Alex choose him, she was in love with Derek but she choose him. Hmmm, maybe
he should ask Alex about that, if she answered that was. Alex had not taken the news well and that, Derek thought, was an understatement. He knelt down beside her and helped her up. "I'm so sorry, Alex. I didn't want to tell you....You were having a real hard time back then. And as time past by and you were happy again, I just couldn't anymore." He swallowed hard, feeling awfull seeing her like this. But she had a right to know. "Alex, we're going to do everything in our power to prevent this from happening again, but..." He touched her shoulder gently. Should he tell her more? Should he tell her Philippe was still alive, just as Marcus was before they really killed him? Why was being a precept so hard sometimes? "You're sorry!" Alex asked, pulling herself together as the enormity of what was being said hit her. "You're sorry?" She had repeated the question and it was obvious she was growing angry. "you didn't think I had a right to know...to protect myself? How could you think that Derek?" What if he hadn't been there to protect her, or worse, what if she were already so tainted they couldn't protect themselves... And he hadn't said anything becaus she been happy? "But what Derek? There's more, I can see it in your eyes. Tell me!" Derek stole himself or the next answer "Philippe isn't dead." He closed his eyes, waiting for the outburst. Alex stared at him in disbelief for a long time, unable to speak. If Phillipe wasn't dead, what did that make me? Demon or human...person or thing? She pushed his hand away, pulling herself to her feet as she looked back at him "I can't believe you Derek, you think you can play God with our lives! You had no right to keep this from me! And the others....does Nick know?" she demanded. Derek stood up too, looking her in the eyes. His face shown guilt and remorse. "No, Nick
doesn't know. And I didn't tell the others either. I just wanted to
protect you all. I feared this day for a long time, hoping it wouldn't
come. I'm sorry for not telling you, but the relationship between
you and Nick was getting tense and I didn't want to destroy
Derek held his hand up to her, in his palm sat a little silver necklace with a cross. "We'll get trough this somehow, ALex. You're strong. You didn't kill me in the cave. You can fight this, with help from us." Whether it was from instinct, remembering her time in the Vampire community or otherwise, Alex took a step back from the crucifix. She felt no comfort from Derek's words; about not having killed Nick. She considered that to be nothing more than pure dumb luck, and as for the cave... "And what if I don't want to fight?" she challenged. "You sent Nick and Kyle into the field without telling them the full story...haven't you learned how dangerous that is by now?" She had an actual urge to hurt him right now, Derek, while stood before her "You've betrayed us all!" Derek had seen the compulsion from Alex against the cross and layed it on the desk. He gave a desperate sigh and looked her in the eyes again, hoping she could see the truth in his eyes. That he really cared for her, and that he was truly sorry. The pain in his chest was prove of that. "Nick and
Kyle are on their way to Frances, there's no harm in that. They'll
be back in a hour or two. And as for you fighting, you are
Nick and Kyle made it to the Morgue and he parked the 'Stang in its usual place when he came 'acallin'. He couldn't help it and had to grin crookedly as he got out. He hoped Francis was working tonight. He was curious to see how the teen reacted to the Coronor. "Are you comming, or are you staying in the car?" he asked a moment later, looking at the car and seeing that the teen hadn't gotten out yet. "I'm ready." Kyle said, getting out and walking with Nick to the side door. Even though Kyle's stomach really couldn't put up with a dead body being cut up, he decided to get over with it and watch. There were reasons why the team did this; to figure out how they died. Some time in the near future, they would've had to come anyway. He entered in front of Nick, being that he opened the door for him. Slowly, he entered the morgue and knew the smell to place right away. "Where do we go from here?" Nick smiled to Kyle and held the door open for him. "Well, thank you kind sir," he replied with a high voice, copying that of a woman's.. Nick shook his head humorously at the other and led the way through the corridors. They passed through the last door and Nick spotted Frances, across the room and cutting into some poor man's brain. He smiled and appeared behind Frances. "What ya doing?" Frances heard two voices behind her and yelped with surprised. She turned around quickly and saw Nick with a huge smile and a boy behind him. She smiled back to them. "Don´t you ever do that again, Nick, you´re always sneaking up on people." She gave him a mock threat by holding the tool she had been using on the corpse in a way that said Nick could be the next one before lowering it and looked at Kyle "Who´s your friend Nick?" Nick pushed Kyle to Francis "This is Kyle Summers, he joined the Luna foundation a couple of months ago." He grinned again. It wasn't like Francis wasn't used to him popping up unexpected like. In fact, scaring her like he did had become habit for both of them.. Alex met his eyes and saw only compassion. The anger she had felt seconds ago faded. She knew in her heart Derek wouldn't put the team through anything they couldn't handle. "I'm sorry...it's just too much to take in right now," she offered by way of an apology. "Where is Phillipe now?" "And are
you sure the morgue's the safest place?" The Morgue... Kyle waved at Frances and noticed the dead body on the slab. He gave a disgusted look at it and then smiled at Frances, a little ill at ease. The woman followed his gaze and covered the body with a sheet, before asking casually "So where can I help you boys with?" Nick's lips quirked. Frances was never one to beat around the bush, so he wouldn't either. "We're here for the stiffs with two biteholes in the neck, and no blood left in their body's. Does that ring a bell to you?" A thought occured to Kyle and he started fiddling with the bag he had brought with him. "Nick, if those bodies wake up, they need to be staked. Here." he took out a stake that was in the pouch of his bag. "Use it just in case there are many of them." Nick couldn't help himself and laughed. He looked at stake in the teen's hand "Boy, you are something, you know that Kyle? I appreciate the thought but people can only be turned into vampires if they drink the blood of the vamp that drank theirs. So, I don't think those pointy things are needed." His laughter died down to humorous chuckles as, noticing Francis' surprised look at what Kyle had and was offering, he followed her to the specific section of drawers that held the bodies they were there to see. Frances opened them up, and went to stand on the opposite side of the rolling metal slab so that Nick could take a closer look on his side. When Nick saw the body of one of the victims, he turned pale. He felt sick in his stomache en dizzy in his head. It couldn't be, he thought. continue>> |
